Cat of Nine Tails by AnUnkindness Cat of Nine Tails by AnUnkindness
A Cat of Nine Tails. I used this as an experiment with transparency work. I must admit I was hoping for some better T-Shirt Template colors since the cat will take on whatever color the shirt is so a yellow or tan would have shown him off a bit more.

I implore the viewer to check him out in a larger size to see the details on the squid tail and face. He turned out rather cutely I think and is based on one of my cats.

Amazing. Personally I think that the red color- if i remember correctly and there was a red color- would have been better. Fantastic design and I love how you made the nine tails squid tails. This ones definitely got my vote. I also submitted some designs. Come have a look^^ "[[link] [[link]

Aw, this would have been really cool on a really bright shirt. : (
Maybe you should have put him on the red shirt?

I don't disagree with you however I just couldn't bring myself to put it on the red. I was hoping for a yellow or tan shirt and was severely disappointed when I opened the template pack. Ah well, just gotta make do I guess. Thanks for the comment though!

A yellow or tan really would have brought out the transparent parts nicely! Too bad they didn't provide us with those colors : (
No problem : )

the idea is cool, but I think you should have used a vector based program such as Illustrator to draw with the pen tool and refine/stylize everything. Also the cat needed a larger moustache to get more of a cat face.

I'm still a bit new at trying to convert my work into a digital format. This was actually done with pen on paper and then scanned. Well, three different sheets of paper that I had to scan and reassemble.

What other methods of vectoring are available? Resizing this thing for the shirt size and to make it upload-able were a pain.

Thanks for the feedback though, all of you!

"Resizing this thing for the shirt size and to make it upload-able were a pain" that's why I mentioned vectorization. Vectorization is basically to use the pen tool (in Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop, etc) and draw over the lines which you scanned before. This way you can resize all you want, and printing will result a lot better. You need to learn how to use the pen tool, it's probably the most important design/illustration tool.

Check this tutorial here:

In your case, if you couldn't do all this, the best way would be using photoshop's Magic Eraser Tool to rapidly delete the white areas.

Good work. :)

Thanks for the info! Yeah, the magic eraser was what I ended up going with, though I decided to leave some of the off-white leftovers on just to sort of break up the gray on the shirt that I was using. Solid backgrounds hurt me deep inside.

I'll definitely check out the pen tool in illustrator when I get the chance. I know of vectorization and such just had no idea on how to do it.

You're welcome. I understand solid backgrounds are not nice, but in this case the background would be the t-shirt tissue, so it was ok if you deleted all the white and left it transparent. In my opinion it would look better. :)
